Two burglary suspects in Sierra Vista caught after foot pursuit | Crime
On Friday, February 8, at approximately 6:36 a.m., the Sierra Vista Police Department received a call from a witness who observed three subjects in the common area of Las Palomas Apartments located at 499 South Carmichael Avenue. The witness then heard a loud banging noise and called police.
Upon arrival at the apartment complex, a Sierra Vista police officer was approached by a second witness who stated he saw two black males in the area of the laundry room. When the witness went over to investigate, the two subjects fled the area. The first officer on the scene provided a description and the direction the suspects fled to officers responding.
A second officer arriving on scene saw two black males matching the description jump a wall, from the apartment complex, into an alleyway. The second officer then pursued the suspects on foot.
The two suspects were then taken into custody a short time later and identified as Victor Smith and Calvin Smith both from Sierra Vista. Although the suspects share the same last names, they are unrelated.
Through the course of the investigation it was determined a Coke and Pepsi machine inside the laundry room had been burglarized and damaged. Inside a backpack that officers saw being carried by Calvin Smith, as he ran from police, were several tools to include a drill that may have been used to break into the machines. Calvin Smith had metal shavings on his clothes and shoes consistent with the burglarized machines. It is unclear if a third suspect was involved so this case remains under investigation.
Victor Smith was arrested and charged with Burglary and Criminal Trespass. Calvin Smith was arrested and charged with Burglary, Criminal Trespass and Possession of Burglary Tools. They were both booked into the Cochise County Jail.
