Save the Scenic Santa Rita's hosting informational event tonight

GREEN VALLEY, AZ (Tucson News Now)- Happening later today the group most outspoken against a major copper mine plan is rallying support again.

The Rosemont Mine could be months from construction, but not if the group gets its way.   Some may believe the Rosemont Copper Mine is close to a done deal, but that is not keeping one group from standing up against the plan.

Save the Scenic Santa Ritas is hosting a meeting this evening in Green Valley.   SSSR will be giving an update on where the mine's progress stands today.  In the past the group has been vocal in challenging Rosemont, saying there would be major damage to air and water quality.

The group is currently appealing two of the mine's permits saying those appeals are under review.

Asked if they would appeal any coming permits, SSSR's president said, "We'll have to see."  She believes the work in the past has been poorly done.

Legal challenges continue against Rosemont Copper

GREEN VALLEY, AZ (Tucson News Now)- Legal challenges continue against the proposed Rosemont Copper Mine south of Tucson.

That is not stopping mine operators from moving forward with the mine that would be on the other side of the Santa Rita Mountains.

It has received all but one of its permits and hopes to break ground by the end of the year.  It all hinges in the U. S. Forest Service and its 'environmental impact study', then the Army Corps of Engineers could grant the final permit.  That could happen in the next few months.

If all goes according to plan construction will start this year, with production beginning in 2015. Once in operation, Rosemont expects that it would employ 450 people full time and predicts a $19 billion injection into Arizona's economy.

The question remains, will this happen on Rosemont's timeline?  Or will appeals slow down the process?

UA report on migrant deaths released later this morning

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now)- Later this morning researchers
will release new details about deaths related to those crossing the border
illegally.

It is a joint effort by the U of
A and the Pima County Medical Examiner's Office.

Researchers at the U of A have
been collecting data for over 20 years.  The report expects to answer key questions
about the large number of migrants dying out in the desert, as they try and
cross illegally into the U.S.  They will
release the report this morning with information on more than 2,000 migrants
who have died crossing the border since 1990.

The data collected also focuses
on factors changed over time with different border enforcement strategies.  Researchers looked at how people are dying
when they try to cross the border and how they are being identified.

The report will be released at 10
a.m. this morning.

Pima County eyeing new racetrack

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now)- Pima County has started the process of taking bids for a new racing experience at the fairgrounds.

It's the vision of some people in the county's tourism industry to bring big-name racing to the Tucson area.

Just what kind of track, who would operate it and what the leasing agreement would be, are still up in the air but are privately being discussed.

The county supervisors met in executive session this morning to discuss the possibility of a new race track at the fairgrounds.

"There's a lot of aspects that need to be hammered out," says District 4 County Supervisor Ray Carroll. "It's a possibility I think we should continue to explore."

After the closed-door hearing, the supervisors voted unanimously to have staff put together a bid package.

"Motor sports are becoming more and more popular," he said. "Especially in the Sun Belt to provide racing year round."
