Bethel Grabs Significant Coaching Post at GCU

Bethel Grabs Significant Coaching Post at GCU

From WillcoxRangeNews.com:

Ryan Bethel has ascended to the head of the Grand Canyon University (GCU) baseball program, albeit temporarily. The Willcox High School graduate was named the interim head coach of the NCAA Division-II University program in Phoenix after previous head coach Dave Stapleton was dismissed on March 10.

Winning the position "is definitely bittersweet," said Bethel. "Stapleton recruited me, I played for and coached for him since '02."

Bethel is in his sixth year as a member of the coaching staff at GCU, where he also played college ball from 2002-05, earning all-region honors, before being drafted by major league baseball's Tampa Bay Rays in 2005. He helped lead Willcox High to three consecutive state baseball titles in 1999-2001 under his father, head coach Russ Bethel.

City Public Works Goes to Golf Carts

From TheTombstoneNews.com:

In the near future you may see Tombstone Public Works Employees going about their daily jobs in new more fuel efficient vehicles.

“The whole idea is to save money,” stated City Clerk/Manager Barnes. “To operate one pick-up truck the fuel is $400 a month, this excludes any needed maintenance.”

The Yamaha mini truck golf carts will cost $100 a month to lease and $50 a month for fuel and save the city $250.00 per vehicle per month. The first question Barnes and Mayor Henderson asked themselves was if carts would be able to handle the daily tasks of Public Works. According to Barnes, the answer is yes. The back ‘bed’ is like a small pickup truck and can hold debris from weed eating and a rack can be mounted in the back to hold different tools like weed eaters.

Border Agent Killed Man Climbing Wall

A sheriff's spokeswoman says a man was climbing a ladder when a Border Patrol agent fatally shot him three
times.

Cochise County sheriff's spokeswoman Carol Capas told The Associated Press on Monday that investigators have no indication that 19-year-old Carlos La Madrid assaulted or tried to assault the agent when he was shot March 21.

La Madrid had fled police in an Arizona border city (Douglas) in a truck and drove to the border with Mexico. He was climbing a ladder and trying to cross the border.

Capas says another man atop the wall began throwing rocks at the agent.
