Bethel Grabs Significant Coaching Post at GCU

Bethel Grabs Significant Coaching Post at GCU

From WillcoxRangeNews.com:

Ryan Bethel has ascended to the head of the Grand Canyon University (GCU) baseball program, albeit temporarily. The Willcox High School graduate was named the interim head coach of the NCAA Division-II University program in Phoenix after previous head coach Dave Stapleton was dismissed on March 10.

Winning the position "is definitely bittersweet," said Bethel. "Stapleton recruited me, I played for and coached for him since '02."

Bethel is in his sixth year as a member of the coaching staff at GCU, where he also played college ball from 2002-05, earning all-region honors, before being drafted by major league baseball's Tampa Bay Rays in 2005. He helped lead Willcox High to three consecutive state baseball titles in 1999-2001 under his father, head coach Russ Bethel.

City Public Works Goes to Golf Carts

From TheTombstoneNews.com:

In the near future you may see Tombstone Public Works Employees going about their daily jobs in new more fuel efficient vehicles.

“The whole idea is to save money,” stated City Clerk/Manager Barnes. “To operate one pick-up truck the fuel is $400 a month, this excludes any needed maintenance.”

The Yamaha mini truck golf carts will cost $100 a month to lease and $50 a month for fuel and save the city $250.00 per vehicle per month. The first question Barnes and Mayor Henderson asked themselves was if carts would be able to handle the daily tasks of Public Works. According to Barnes, the answer is yes. The back ‘bed’ is like a small pickup truck and can hold debris from weed eating and a rack can be mounted in the back to hold different tools like weed eaters.

Sheriff’s Office Investigates Officer Involved Shooting

The following is a news release from the Cochise County Sheriff's Office:

On Monday March 21, at about 12:43pm, the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office was advised of an officer involved shooting near the International boundary east of the Douglas Port of Entry.

Sheriff’s Deputies and Investigators arrived on scene and were advised that Douglas Police Department observed a Chevy Avalanche traveling in the Douglas area that appeared to be suspicious.

Once the driver of the vehicle observed the Douglas Police Department unit, the driver fled at a high rate of speed southbound towards the International boundary. US Border Patrol Agents were in the area when the vehicle made it to the border.

At this time, there were rocks thrown at the Border Patrol Agent who then fired his duty weapon striking the driver three times.

Border Agent Killed Man Climbing Wall

Border Agent Killed Man Climbing Wall

A sheriff's spokeswoman says a man was climbing a ladder when a Border Patrol agent fatally shot him three
times.

Cochise County sheriff's spokeswoman Carol Capas told The Associated Press on Monday that investigators have no indication that 19-year-old Carlos La Madrid assaulted or tried to assault the agent when he was shot March 21.

La Madrid had fled police in an Arizona border city (Douglas) in a truck and drove to the border with Mexico. He was climbing a ladder and trying to cross the border.

Capas says another man atop the wall began throwing rocks at the agent.

La Madrid was shot three times and died. The man on the wall got away.

Texas Congressman Tours Arizona-Mexico Border

Texas Congressman Tours Arizona-Mexico Border

By Teresa Jun,

Congressman Ted Poe, who represents the 2nd U.S. Congressional District of Texas, toured the Arizona-Mexico border Friday afternoon.

He was invited by the office of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords to see border security firsthand. The two had worked together last year, to call on President Obama to assign National Guard troops near the border.

"It's not a partisan issue, it's a bipartisan issue," Rep. Poe said. "We have the same problems in Texas as Arizona does. And we need more boots on the ground, right here at the border."

A local rancher who led Rep. Poe on the tour argues that more law enforcement officers should be assigned right along the border, instead of at stations a few miles into Arizona.

"It's amazing to me that (illegal border crossers) can get 50 miles into Arizona before they're even caught," said Gary Thrasher, who owns ranch properties near the border in Douglas. "That's why we want officers out on the border, on the fence. Right now, the Border Patrol works quite a distance from the border."
