Naco Fire Department Starts Fund for Fire Victim

From svherald.com:

Firefighters with the Naco Fire Department have started a fund in memory the 12-year-old boy who was killed in a house fire in Bisbee on Saturday morning.

Fire Chief Jesus Morales said they decided to start the fund to help the father.

People can donate to the Alexander Swigert Memorial Fund at the Bank of America locations in Bisbee and Sierra Vista.

One of the Naco volunteer firefighters arrived just after the Border Patrol, added Morales.

The agents had to subdue Alexander’s father, Joseph, who tried to go back in for the boy when he realized Alexander was not with him.

Morales continued, “My guy hurt his hand knocking on the windows trying to get the attention of the boy. The house was fully engulfed and we had no way to get inside. We all held on to the hope that maybe he became scared and hid somewhere outside.”

Ceremony Marks Crime Victims Rights Week

From svherald.com:

A brief ceremony was held on Monday in Bisbee in honor of National Crime Victim’s Right Week, which runs from April 10 to April 16.

Doyle Johnstun, chief deputy Cochise County attorney, read a proclamation at noon around the fountain near the entrance of the main courthouse in Bisbee.

About 20 million Americans are victims of crime each year. Each crime affects many more people, including families, friends and communities, he said.

He said crime causes emotional, physical, psychological and financial harm on victims, as they lose loved ones, life savings, mental and physical health and their sense of security. Progress has been made in recognizing crime’s impact on victims.

VIDEO: Marsh Station Bridge Demolition

What were you doing last Friday night? It probably wasn't as much at what demolition crews were doing to an old bridge over Interstate 10 east of Tucson.

Arizona Department of Transportation crews tore down the old Marsh Station bridge, which has recently been replaced, along with the fire-damage Mescal Road overpass.

ADOT has released a time-lapse video showing their work at Marsh Station.

Brooks' Name to Appear on Ballot

From BensonNews-sun.com:

After more than a week of calling multiple state agencies and arguing with the City of Benson, Ron Brooks' name will appear on the May 17 election ballot under City Council candidates. The April 6 edition election date was erroneous.

Brooks, who ran as a write in candidate in the March primary election, became angry after City Attorney Michael Massee said his name would not appear on the upcoming general election ballot.

Massee had said it was his opinion that language in city ordinance 2-3-3, regarding election procedure, did not allow a write-in candidate such as Brooks to have his name placed on a General Election ballot.

As a write-in candidate, Brooks' name was not on the primary ballot. Brooks' supporters had to write his name in the space provided. He received 183 votes in the March election.

Brooks argued that the 183 votes qualify him to be on the general election ballot alongside candidate Patty Lambert.
