Bisbee Project to get USDA Recognition on Earth Day

From svherald.com:

City Manager Steve Pauken announced Tuesday at the council meeting that the USDA has selected Bisbee’s Tin Town sewer project for recognition on Earth Day, April 22.

Each year, the USDA selects a location in Arizona as an example of good environmental stewardship, he explained. This year, the Tin Town project stood out in the state.

For the past few years, the city has been working to rid the small community of the cesspools that pose a health hazard and get them on the sewer system, said Public Works Director Tom Klimek.

Working with the Border Environmental Cooperation Commission (BECC), a study of the problem and a design to get the waste down to the treatment plant has been completed.

Benson School District Wins Ruling

From BensonNews-sun.com:

Administrative Law Judge Eric Bryant ruled the Benson School District followed proper procedure in meeting instructional needs for a homebound sixth-grade student.

Bryant dismissed the case filed by former resident Kristina Townsend in September after the district opted to enroll her daughter in the San Pedro Valley Online Academy, which provides an alternative to public instruction for students between kindergarten and 12th grade.

Even thought Townsend moved out of the Benson School District, a judgment was still required in the pending case.

Townsend, along with her 11-year-old daughter, are homebound due to mold exposure both are said to have suffered in 2007.

Townsend objected to Benson Schools enrolling her daughter in the online program, filing a complaint with the Arizona Department of Education.

The complaint involved four separate issues.

Rattlesnake's Are on the Move

From TheTombstoneNews.com:

As the weather warms up, humans are not the only ones to come out of their homes to enjoy the warm weather and sunshine. According to Tombstone Animal Control Officer Everetts, rattlesnakes have already been seen throughout town. “The weather is beginning to get warmer and the ones that are coming out of hibernation now are really hungry and grouchy,” stated Everetts.

Everetts stated that if you see a rattlesnake to immediately call the Marshal’s Department or 911 so he can come out and remove it so they are not a danger to people or pets. “I just ask that someone keeps an eye on the snake so I know where to get it so I don’t end up getting bit,” stated Everetts.

Everetts went on to say that if you are out and hear rattling the first thing to do is to hold perfectly still until you find out where they are, then slowly back up. “These snakes can strike over half the distance of their body.
